Eco-Council 2025

16th Sep 2025

Why do we have an Eco Council?

The Eco-Council is an ideal opportunity for our pupils to ensure our school is environmentally friendly. The Council benefits the whole school, pupils and teachers, because pupils’ can influence decisions and share ideas. Our committee members develop skills such as confidence, communication and negotiation. It is the responsibility of each member to ensure that they express both their own views and the views of all the other pupils they represent.

Who can be a member of the Eco Committee?
Representatives deliver their manifesto and are elected to the council.

What do we do?

Moneynick Eco-Council will meet regularly to discuss how we can make the school more environmentally friendly.

At the beginning of each year the Eco-Council carry out an environmental review and prepare an action plan for the whole school to engage in.

Throughout the year these targets form the basis of the Eco-Councils work but they do get involved in some other projects along the way.

In the past year the Eco-Council worked extremely hard with many outstanding achievements which included;

  • Recycling clothes through the Cash for Clobber Campaign
  • Installing a new Poly Tunnel and reclaiming garden
  • Planting trees, vegetables and flowers around the school to encourage our local pollinators
  • Harvesting crops and holding a Farmer’s Market to sell their produce.
  • Designing and building two Scarecrows and ‘Mini Garden’ for Garden Show Ireland
  • Enhancing our social and emotional well being with the 'Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing' initiative, achieving the Take5 Level 3 Award for the Second Year.
  • Securing funding from The Live Here Love Here.

For this academic year (2025/26) our Eco-Council action plan involves 3 targets, namely:

  • Increasing our knowledge of the 'Global World' and our 'Global Environment'.
  • Organising ‘ The Moneynick Butterfly Garden Show’.
  • Descreasing all forms of waste in school.
