Primary 4/5 Blackberry Picking Thematic Week
This week, Primary 4/5 continued their journey through their theme 'Houses and Homes', inspired by the poet Seamus Heaney and the beauty he captured in his 'HomePlace'. Their learning stemmed from his much-loved poem 'Blackberry Picking' as they linked numerous areas of the curriculum through playful, meaningful and engaging learning experiences.
📚 Literacy – Pupils explored instructional language, writing recipes for a delicious blackberry smoothie. After studying Heaney’s poem, they also created a collaborative acrostic poem, brainstorming descriptive words and phrases to enrich their vocabulary.
➕ Numeracy – They calculated the cost of ingredients and practised using standard units of measurement while preparing their recipe.
🌍 World Around Us – Children discussed the changing seasons, searched for signs of autumn and compared local fruits with those from other countries, learning that some fruits are imported.
💻 ICT – Using PicCollage, pupils showcased their favourite photos and documented their learning journey.
Well done, Primary 4/5 on this fantastic celebration of learning!👏
Blackberry Picking
Beautiful Blackberries hidden in the bush
Lovely, Lucious, squishy finds
Amazing, tricky, purple and black
Cold, watery, sometimes gloopy
Keeping safe when picking funny blackberries
Blackberry picking full of excitement
Enjoyable, juicy hedgerow treasures
Ripe, firm, sweet or sour
Really sticky and stains your fingertips
Yummy, sweet, jammy and juicy
Prickly bushes guarding our blackberry prizes
Ireland is filled with blackberry magic
Colourful surprises purple, black, yellow or red
keep on going, we need full bags to eat
I love making blackberry crumble
Natures treasures all around us
Great times together with smiles of fun!
